Dear Parents,
As of August 1, 2009, the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy completed the “Phase In” of rules and regulations that impact the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs that we operate. We are in compliance with the policy. Therefore, we have eliminated deep-fat frying as a method of on-site preparation for foods served as part of reimbursable school meals and a la carte. Schools may not serve or provide access for students to Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (FMNV) and all other forms of candy at any time anywhere on school premises until after the end of the last scheduled class. This includes candy bars and packaged candies and other snacks that do not meet the requirements for fat, saturated fat, sugar and portion size. Such foods and beverages may not be sold or given away to students on school premises by school administrators or staff (principals, coaches, teachers, etc.), students or student groups, parents or parent groups, guest speakers or any other person, company or organization. For exemptions and a listing of foods and beverages restricted by the FMNV policy, see section VI of the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. Visit the web site for more information.

Our responsibility is to comply and promote the consumption of nutritious food to our students. We soon hope to provide nutrition information on our menus on our web site. We ask that parents also respect and comply with the Texas Nutrition Policy when visiting our cafeterias. There is a nutrient calculator available on the Square Meals web site if you would like see what products meet the nutritional guidelines of our program.
We are working hard to provide nutritious meals that students want to eat. Our menus follow Nutrient Menu standards that require us to provide 1/3 of the Child’s age related Recommend Daily Allowance (RDA) for Nutrition Standards. We use low fat products; encourage eating fruits and vegetables by providing a variety of fresh, frozen and/or canned products. Based on a weekly average of food items consumed by students, our meals meet the standard of 30% fat and no more than 10% of fat from Saturated fats. We also work to eliminate trans-fats in all our food products.
We are currently working to improve the availability of nutrition information, resources and education opportunities to our students to help improve their health and well being. Our goal is to have our cafeteria be a learning laboratory for making healthy food decisions. Healthy eating can be reinforced at home as well. If we can be of assistance, to please feel free to contact us either through our website by selecting Nutrition Services under the Departments tab
